Jurgen Klopp praises Liverpool’s calm heads after late win

Liverpool – Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised his team’s composure after they scored late in stoppage time to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 in a tense Premier League match on Wednesday at Anfield.

After scoring nine goals against Bournemouth the previous weekend, Liverpool struggled until substitute Fabio Carvalho scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of extra time.

Klopp told BT Sport, “This feels like the best way to win a football game – I don’t need that every week, but if you can do it once or twice, it’s great.”

“Even before we fell behind 1-0, I told the boys at halftime that we appeared desperate when we did not play the extra pass. When we did it we immediately became extremely dangerous “he stated.

This is the most effective strategy for winning a football game, but I don’t need it every week!

“In the end, we had to force ourselves to remain somewhat more composed and to continue on.”

Klopp praised Carvalho, who turned 20 on Tuesday and has made an excellent start since joining the club in May from Fulham.

The 55-year-old coach said, “He is extremely essential to us, and if a boy is as brilliant as he is, he needs the (big) moments as well, like to really get it, and that goal certainly helps them out.”

After taking the lead in the first half via club-record acquisition Alexander Isak, Newcastle did all possible to run out the clock, to to the chagrin of the home team.

“I believe that scoring in 90 plus eight minutes was the ideal answer. To that, I must admit. And I’m thrilled about that, “Klopp remarked.
