Johnny Mercer believes veterans deserve support

Minister for Veterans Affairs, Johnny Mercer, believes veterans deserve as much support after leaving the battlefield as they did during their service.

Although many military personnel transition successfully into civilian life, some struggle to access employment, housing, and healthcare. For these individuals, receiving the right help is essential.

The Minister and the Minister for Defence People, Veterans, and Service Families have jointly launched a review into welfare provision for veterans under the umbrella of Veterans UK.

This review is being undertaken for two reasons. Firstly, there is a moral obligation to provide the best possible support to former service personnel who have risked their lives for their country.

Veterans’ services have been underfunded and reliant on paper records and outdated technology for too long. In 2023, it is time for our services to reflect the digital age.

Therefore, the Veterans Digital ID card will be delivered this year to make it easier for ex-service personnel to access services nationwide.

The second reason for the review is due to the priority veterans’ issues receive under this government.

The Office for Veterans Affairs was established in 2019 to drive government support for former service personnel.

The government has also launched Op Courage, a veteran’s mental health and wellbeing service in England, a new chronic pain service, and Op Fortitude to end veteran homelessness.

As support for veterans expands, assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of current service provisions under Veterans UK is essential.

This review will answer important questions such as whether accessing help is too confusing and whether service provision can be improved.

The goal is to fulfil the promise of making the United Kingdom the best place in the world to be a veteran.
