Jamie Gillan gets a new 2 year contract as the Giants punter

The New York Giants had the option to replace Jamie Gillan as their punter after his first year with the team.

However, the Giants have decided to keep the 25-year old, as they believe he is not a finished product.

On Monday, the Giants officially announced Gillan’s return, offering him a two-year contract worth $4 million.

Nicknamed the Scottish Hammer due to his strong leg, Gillan did enough during the 2022 season to convince the team’s general manager, Joe Schoen, head coach Brian Daboll, and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey that he deserved to stay.

Moreover, he is also the holder on field goals, which ensures continuity with one of the best kickers in the league, Graham Gano.

The return of long snapper Casey Kreiter, who is also expected to be re-signed, should also help maintain this continuity.

The Giants took a chance on Gillan after he spent his first three NFL seasons with the Browns.

Although Gillan struggled with consistency, he finished the season with a career-high gross punting average of 46.8 yards, ranking 19th in the league, and a net punting average of 40.2 yards, ranking 26th in the NFL.

Gillan did have some areas to improve, such as his touch, as he had nine touchbacks, the second-highest among punters in 2022.

However, he did show considerable improvement in the second half of the season, demonstrating signs of progress that encouraged the Giants to bring him back.
