A man accused of torturing and murdering his partner’s 15-month-old son has told the court that he was a “loving and careful” father. The child’s mother, Louise Lennon, and her boyfriend, Jake Drummond, have both denied charges relating to the child’s death.
In August 2019, Jacob Lennon was taken to the hospital with serious head injuries. Following a post-mortem examination, his injuries were found to be consistent with long-term abuse.
Drummond denied murdering Jacob and causing intentional harm to the baby, which included injuries to the genitals caused by a sharp object. Lennon denied causing or allowing the death of a child and child cruelty.
During his testimony, Drummond said that he had previously worked as a caretaker and had lost his job in early 2019 due to heavy drinking after splitting up with his child’s mother.
He admitted to using cannabis since the age of 11 and smoking it nearly every day in 2019. He also said that he had previously sold drugs to his partner, who had five boys when they met.
Drummond denied attacking his former partner when she claimed that he had strangled and attacked her. He said that they broke up in February 2019 after one of her sons caused the death of one of his daughter’s guinea pigs.
In 2019, Drummond said he was in a “friends with benefits” relationship with his former partner while also being in a relationship with Lennon. Drummond said he was still in love with his former partner and wanted to get back with her. The trial continues.
