Jacob Pratt is found dead in his Chelsea apartment in New York City

On February 16, 2023, a 33-year-old Google worker named Jacob Pratt was found dead in his Chelsea apartment in New York City. He appeared to have hung himself, according to an NYPD source. Pratt had worked at Google for a year and a half and was a partnership leader at the company. However, it is unclear if he was among the 12,000 employees who were laid off globally by Google recently.

Pratt had started at Google as an agency manager in May 2019 and had since grown in his position. He was described as having a dream job as an accounting manager at Google in Manhattan, according to his obituary. Authorities were called to his apartment on West 26th Street and Sixth Avenue, where he was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Pratt’s family has urged people to donate to a mental health fund in his honour, with the hope of raising awareness and helping others. The fundraiser, which has stopped accepting donations, has raised nearly $12,000. The family is asking for donations to Make-A-Wish Michigan and National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Google’s parent company Alphabet had announced job cuts of 12,000 across the company, affecting recruiting, corporate functions, engineering, and products teams. This was part of a recent wave of white-collar layoffs in the tech industry. Meanwhile, blue-collar workers are in high demand.

Pratt’s celebration of life will take place on February 28 at Riverview Church’s REO Town Venue in Lansing, Michigan. The family plans to serve pizza, which was his favorite food.
