Is Sherwood filmed in Nottinghamshire?

Sherwood is the work of writer James Graham, who grew up in the area during the period of the killings and also wrote ITV’s Quiz.

Last night’s episode featured several frightening events, only hours after local councillor Sarah Vincent (Joanna Froggatt) married Neel Fisher (Bally Gill) in a wedding attended by many local residents.

However, near the end of the episode, former miner Gary Jackson (Alun Armstrong) was murdered outside his house on his way home from the bar, sparking worries that the murder was linked to the conflicts that tore the community apart during the 1984-85 miners’ strike.

The series, which resumes tonight on BBC One, is described as a “contemporary drama at the heart of which lie two shocking and unexpected killings that shatter an already fractured community and spark a massive manhunt.”

The six-part series is based on two real-life deaths in Nottinghamshire in 2004, which, while seemingly unrelated, occurred weeks apart and shocked the local community.

Keith Frogson, a local miner, was killed outside his home, and her father shot dead Chanel Taylor just weeks after.

Sherwood investigates the murders’ historical context as well as their impact on the local community.

And, while the show is set in Nottingham, where is it shot?

Where was Sherwood shot?

Sherwood is set in Ashfield, where the show’s creator, James, grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s.

James has announced that filming took place in various sites in Nottinghamshire.

He told press that ‘I was surprisingly moved to see… all those shots of the community that you see, that’s when we filmed in Annesley and Newton and to see that on the BBC… to the BBC I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.

‘Coming up, you’ve got highlights that include Newton train station so get ready for that. Newstead Abbey, we did almost a whole episode in Newton abbey, and lots of places.’

Newstead Abbey was previously an Augustinian priory and is best known as Lord Byron’s ancestral residence.

However, some of the sequences were shot against the backdrop of Lancashire rather than Nottinghamshire.

According to Bolton News, some sequences were shot at Pigeon Tower in Rivington, a small village near Bolton.

Because of the Covid pandemic, James revealed that several sequences were shot elsewhere, including Manchester, Blackpool, and areas of Yorkshire.

Sherwood continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
