Indonesia earthquake kills four as floating restaurant sinks

Today’s earthquake in Indonesia resulted in at least four fatalities as a floating restaurant fell into the water.

As the magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook the eastern region of Papua in the afternoon of Friday, February 9, the Cirita Cafe in Jayapura collapsed.

Four ladies were trapped under the debris after being unable to escape the burning building in time.

Responders discovered them dead at Jayapura Bay.

It was stated that other facilities, including the Jayapura Mall, had suffered damage. Numerous locals also suffered injuries.

The earthquake was reported to have occurred around 1:28 pm local time, about 1 km southwest of Jayapura, at a depth of 10 km, according to Indonesia’s meteorological, climatology, and geophysics department.

The nation is bordered by the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the region of the planet where most earthquakes and volcanic eruptions take place.

Only a few days before, an earthquake in Turkey claimed the lives of at least 15,000 people across the nation as well as in neighboring Syria.

On Tuesday, an earthquake of a 7.6 magnitude was also felt in Darwin, Australia, beneath the Banda Sea near Indonesia.

In Indonesia, it injured one person and caused minor damage to a few nearby structures.
