Brian May, guitarist of the iconic rock band Queen, has revealed that the band used to dislike it when fans sang along at their concerts. Despite initially feeling irritated by fans belting out their tunes, May decided to embrace the idea and write “We Will Rock You” as the perfect sing-along hit.

May said that Queen just wished fans would shut up and watch their shows, as followers of other big 1970s groups did. However, Queen’s attitude changed when the crowd sang every word to every song at one of their concerts. May then decided to write a song that would harness that energy.

May revealed in an interview with Total Guitar magazine that he asked himself what he could ask an audience to do if they were all crammed together.

The answer was simple: they could sing. With that in mind, May could hear the song in his head: “We will, we will rock you!” He was nervous about the song being over-simplistic and not sounding like a proper rock song. Roger Taylor also had misgivings about it, but May eventually won the argument.

May worried about whether “We Will Rock You” would be a success, but when he heard Freddie Mercury singing it, he started to be more confident, as Mercury sounded like a kind of rabble-rouser.

The song was put on their News of the World album, where the following track was another classic crowd anthem “We Are The Champions”. Seven years later, the band went on to write another classic singalong in “Radio Ga Ga”.
