Longtime guitarist for Fall Out Boy revealed on Wednesday that he will temporarily leave the band to focus on his mental health.
“Neil Young once screamed that it is preferable to burn out than to fade away. Joe Trohman said in a message released on Fall Out Boy’s social media sites, “I can tell you unequivocally that burning out is horrible.”
“Without going into exhaustive detail, I must state that my mental health has deteriorated rapidly over the past several years,” he continued. “Therefore, in order to avoid fading away and never returning, I will be taking a break from work, which unfortunately includes a brief separation from Fall Out Boy.”
He stated, “My mental health has deteriorated rapidly over the past several years.”

Trohman, 38, said that the decision “hurts” him, as the rock band revealed less than 12 hours previously that their new album, “So Much (For Stardust),” will be released on March 24.
Nonetheless, he emphasized that the record “fills [him] with great pride.”
Additionally, the guitarist promised fans that he “absolutely, 100 percent” intends to rejoin the band in the future.
“In the interim, I must prioritize myself and my mental health in order to recover,” he explained. “Thank you to everyone, including my bandmates and family, for respecting and understanding this difficult but necessary decision.”
Trohman co-founded Fall Out Boy with lead vocalist Patrick Stump and bassist Pete Wentz in 2001. The band recruited drummer Andy Hurley in 2003, the same year they released their debut album “Take This to Your Grave.”
The 2005 album “From Under the Cork Tree” by Fall Out Boy includes the smash singles “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Dance, Dance.”
Recent hits by the Grammy nominees include “Centuries” (2014) and “The Last of the Real Ones” (2017).
Trohman, who presented the podcast “I Hate Myself” in 2021, has been candid about his issues with depression, OCD, and imposter syndrome for years.
Ruby and Zayna are his daughters with his wife, Marie Goble Trohman.
