Global Human Rights Ambassador French’s Guatemala trip

Rita French, Britain’s Global Ambassador for Human Rights, will visit Guatemala on November 17-18, 2022.

Her journey highlights the United Kingdom’s strategic commitment to combating corruption and supporting human rights as cornerstones of British foreign policy, particularly the promotion of media freedom and judicial independence.
Ambassador French will meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala City to discuss common worldwide human rights concerns, such as the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine and threats to freedom in other regions of the world, particularly Latin America.
In addition, the Human Rights Ambassador will discuss Guatemala’s situation with the recently appointed Ombudsman, the Presidential Commission on Peace and Human Rights, Congressional representatives, and broader civil society organizations. Ambassador French will reaffirm the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting organizations that promote human rights, lobbying host governments, and discussing rules in international forums during these sessions.
Priorities for the United Kingdom include combating discrimination, particularly against women and LGBTQI+ individuals, enshrining freedom of religion and speech, and continuing to preserve democracy. Ambassador French will conclude by emphasizing the necessity for enterprises to continue supporting human rights as a means to promote Guatemalan prosperity and well-being.
