A functional society requires independent media, yet these organizations are under unprecedented pressure.

We honor the reporters who put their lives in danger to bring you news from the front lines and in conflict areas.

We are concerned about newsroom closures and deplore regulations passed in Russia that make it illegal to report on the conflict in Ukraine.

We also strongly oppose policies that impose a complete information blackout and severely curtail Russia’s media independence.

The UK is acting to safeguard the importance of independent media both domestically and internationally.

2019, we co-founded the Media Freedom Coalition with Canada, which has now expanded to include more than 50 nations and promotes media freedom and journalist safety on a global scale.

Like the other Coalition members, we are dedicated to enhancing the home media experience.

We introduced a National Action Plan for Journalist Safety in 2021, and we’re also thinking about legislation to address the chilling impact on free speech caused by “Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation.”
