The UK Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ambassador Simon Manley, delivered the UK statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Belarus

Let me begin by expressing my gratitude to the Special Rapporteur for her findings and her suggestions, which we wholeheartedly agree with.

Let me also commend the Belarusian people for their bravery in the face of oppression.

We are aware that you have never voted for your nation to support Putin’s aggression against your neighbors and friends in Ukraine.

An disturbing number of arbitrary arrests and detentions are still occurring.

As you point out, Special Rapporteur, absurd trials that result in lengthy, politically motivated sentences continue to occur.

Torture and other cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment are commonplace for those who are detained. The fact that the dictatorship did not thoroughly investigate about 5,000 complaints speaks for itself.

Let me reiterate my plea for a stop to human rights abuses, for an inquiry into those abuses and for those responsible to be held accountable, for the unconditional release of all political prisoners, for new, fair elections, and for an end to Putin’s aggressiveness.

How can the UN effectively assist the Belarusian people in the face of such repression, Special Rapporteur?
