A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 8-year-old neighbour in Bronville near Welkom in the Free State. The girl was at the back of their house when the man forced her into a shack where he strangled and raped her.
The suspect was apprehended by the community in Oppenheimer Park Thabong, where he was handed over to the police. The victim was taken to Bongani Hospital for medical treatment, and the suspect will appear in Welkom Magistrate’s Court on 27 February.
In a separate incident, an 18-year-old woman was found sitting on Champion Street in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, on 28 January, and informed officers that she had been raped.
The teenager said she had fled from the hospital, where she had been admitted for a week for a medical condition. The woman met an older man who took her to his house and raped her.
She left his house the following morning and was wandering the streets with a bag containing eastern clothing. She could not provide contact information for her family.
Residents of Verulam contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) to inform them about the incident. Reaction Officers interviewed the woman upon arrival, and she told them about the alleged rape.
