After going missing for two days, the body of a 56-year-old British tourist who was on vacation in Italy was found at the base of a cliff.

Gerard Christopher Turner made the decision to take a stroll in the mountains behind the village where he and his family were staying while they were vacationing in Lezzono, Lake Como, near the Alps, in northern Italy.

On June 30, he left alone at around 2:30 pm, leaving his family behind at the motel.

A few hours later, Turner called his wife to let her know he would be late, according to Il Giorno.

But as time passed without his reply, she realized that was the final time she would ever hear from him.

Over 50 men, including members of the XIX Delegation of the Alpine Rescue, firefighters, Civil Protection, and Carabinieri, participated in the search.

They were looking in the vicinity of Carvagnana, which is situated between Nesso and Pognana Lario and is where the man’s cell phone last had service. In order to aid in the search, the fire department also summoned in canine teams from Piedmont.

Eventually, Italian authorities requested a helicopter to use a thermoscanner in an unsuccessful attempt to find Turner.

Turney’s body lay at the base of a cliff in an inaccessible region until the fire service used drones to scour the area.
