Gary Lineker’s Broadcasting Career

Gary Lineker’s Broadcasting Career

Gary Lineker, a former footballer turned broadcaster, has built a £26 million fortune over a near three-decade broadcasting career at the BBC. Despite being the highest-paid ‘talent’ at the Corporation, the Beeb’s decision to stand by him following his highly-political tweets has led experts to ponder if they need him more than he needs them. Lineker has close to ten other income streams, including TV advertising campaigns, a TV production company, and a burgeoning podcast business run through Goalhanger Films, which is predicted to make him even richer.

Apart from his successful career, Lineker has faced two divorces and a tax row with HMRC over a £4.9 million bill. He has paid the income tax bill in full but is currently appealing the demand. Lineker insists that all taxes were paid on the income through a partnership set up in 2012 with his ex-wife Danielle Bux and is expected to argue that his partnership, Gary Lineker Media (GLM), is required to funnel his income through because of the wide variety of work he does.

Aside from his work with the BBC, Lineker has other interests, including investments in an insurance company that aims to reduce premiums for drivers between the ages of 17 and 25, a ‘development of building projects’ business, and his own range of sunglasses and glasses for high street chain Vision Express. Lineker also promotes upmarket shirt brand TM Lewin and is set to host a new gameshow called Sitting On A Fortune for ITV.

Lineker’s success is not only attributed to his high-profile presenting roles, but also his TV production company and burgeoning podcast business. His production company, Goalhanger Films, has produced shows for the BBC, and his podcast business has been signed up with global entertainment agency WME. Lineker’s podcasts, including The Rest Is Politics and The Rest Is History, have received critical acclaim, with the latter considered one of the UK’s best podcasts.

With four years until retirement age and three years left on his lucrative BBC deal, Lineker has the potential to increase his wealth even further. He has hinted that he could leave the BBC to work on his podcast business full time, stating, ‘it’s a very, very good business.’ Despite calls for his sacking over his highly-political tweets, Lineker remains a highly sought-after broadcaster with numerous income streams.
