According to new data, Gary Lineker is the only person to earn over £1 million annually and the top-earning on-air talent at the BBC for the fifth year in a row.

The 61-year-old pundit and former footballer made between £1,350,000 and £1,354,999 in 2021–2022, a decrease of £10,000 from the previous year, for work that included Match Of The Day and Sports Personality Of The Year.

Lineker initially topped the list for 2017/18 with a pay bracket of £1,750,000 to £1,759,999, and in 2020 it was announced he had taken a voluntary pay cut.

Lineker has been embroiled in a battle with HMRC over £4.9 million in tax it claims he owes.

With a salary between £980,000 and £984,999, Zoe Ball continues to be the second highest paid talent for the broadcaster, but statistics indicate that her pay is declining for a second year in a row.

Her pay has decreased to under £1 million as a result of hosting The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Radio 2 for about 210 episodes.

Alan Shearer’s salary has increased by £60,000 year over year, bringing it to £450,000 to £454,999.

He now shares third place with Steve Wright, whose salary has decreased by £15,000 this year.

Four out of the top ten highest paid individuals have seen their salaries decrease, according to the corporation’s annual report for 2021/22, which also happens to be its centennial.

Greg James, whose salary increased by £80,000, is the only new entry in the top 10.

The 36-year-old makes between £390,000 and £394,999 per year working for Radio 1, Radio 4’s Rewinder, Out Out! Live, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and Sports Personality Of The Year, among other gigs.

There are three fewer women in this year’s top 10, down from four in 2017.

Due to data indicating that Lauren Laverne’s salary has decreased by £15,000 to the range of £380,000-£384,999, she does not appear in this year’s top 10.

In the annual report, other notable increases on the overall list of top-earning on-air talent include those of Naga Munchetty (an increase of £110,000) and Amol Rajan (an increase of £85,000.

Meanwhile, Victoria Derbyshire has seen a £70,000 increase.

Additionally absent from the list is Graham Norton, who left Radio 2 in December 2020 to launch a program at Virgin Radio.

Over the past year, the BBC has lost a number of prominent on-air talent to competing networks, including Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel, Andrew Marr, and Dan Walker.

The BBC’s license price will be frozen under inflation for the following two years, Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries confirmed earlier this year.
