Gary Lineker, the outspoken social commentator and Match of the Day presenter, has hinted that he will not be suspended by the BBC over his comments on the Government’s asylum policy.
Lineker caused controversy when he retweeted a Home Office video on the new Illegal Migration Bill, which he described as “beyond awful.” He also criticized the policy as being “immeasurably cruel” and using language similar to that used in 1930s Germany.
The former footballer refused to delete the tweet, which sparked accusations of impartiality as a BBC employee and led to a meeting with director-general Tim Davie.
However, Lineker suggested in a tweet that he would not be reprimanded and was “looking forward” to presenting Match of the Day on Saturday evening.
The row between Lineker and the Government intensified when Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt used him as an analogy for Labour’s position on the legislation during a speech.
Mordaunt accused Labour of “borrowing from the Gary Lineker playbook” and called for more “centre forwards” who could “solve” the problem of immigration.
Lineker responded to Mordaunt’s comments on Twitter, thanking her for the mention and stating that he was “just happy to have been better in the 6 yard box than you are at the dispatch box.” Despite the controversy, Lineker’s fans have shown support for his views on the Government’s policy.
