Four Nkomazi flood victims have been reported missing by Mpumalanga police

Mpumalanga police confirmed that four persons had gone missing since the floods in Nkomazi.

According to police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala, two persons have been reported missing since Sunday last week, with two more reported missing on Thursday.

“We had two that were missing from Sunday last week, that was an old man and a pupil but over and above that because of the heavy rains that took place yesterday (Thursday) two people were also said to have been missing,”

According to Mohlala, their divers are still on the site. He said that they are still looking for corpses, but it is becoming more difficult due to the floods.

“The pupil was 18 and the others are elders, and I don’t have their ages at my disposal but all of them are elderly people. There has been no child that has been reported missing so far.”

According to Mohlala, the pupil was washed away while attempting to cross the river. The elderly man was about to examine his set fishing trap when he was washed away by the river.

“The other ones (two elders) are due to the heavy rains and we suspect that they might have been trying to cross the river or they might have been swept by the floods because it has been raining heavily.”

Several routes in the Nkomazi region have been closed owing to floods.

“By yesterday afternoon we had the Mananga, Mbuzini, and Tonga Roads could not be accessible, one of the bridges that are most problematic is the Komati River bridge and that’s where we get some challenges,” Mohlala added.
