Former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his full backing for Godswill Akpabio to become the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly.
Wike believes that those opposing Akpabio’s candidacy are intentionally obstructing the administration of President Bola Tinubu, potentially causing discord between the executive and legislative branches of government.
In a statement released by his media aide, Wike emphasized that those working against Akpabio were previously against Tinubu’s presidential aspirations.
Advocating for South-South Representation in Senate Leadership
Wike further supported Akpabio’s candidacy by stating that it is appropriate for the South-South region to produce the next Senate President.
He highlighted the historical disparity in Senate presidency representation, noting that the South-South had only produced one Senate President, Joseph Wayas, back in 1979, while the Southeast had produced over seven.
Wike believes that the South-South should have the opportunity to hold this position.
Promoting Cordial Relations between Executive and Legislative Arms
Wike emphasized the importance of allowing the Tinubu administration to commence with a harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative branches.
He urged support for the preferred candidate of President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wike argued that a smooth administration is vital for the well-being of Nigerians and that any discord between the executive and legislative branches would ultimately harm the country.
He called for unity and inclusivity, emphasizing the need for everyone to feel a sense of belonging and to work together for the betterment of the nation.
