This morning on the Today programme, a former Russian lawmaker and Putin advisor warned that British towns may be targeted by Putin’s nuclear weapons.

After barely exchanging pleasantries with BBC Radio 4 host Justin Webb, Sergei Markov started a series of nuclear war threats.

It is not a pleasant morning for everyone. Russia is partially mobilised, and Vladimir Putin has informed your British audience that he is prepared to use nuclear weapons against Western nations, including Great Britain.

Your cities will be singled out.

Markov, who was elected to the Russian State Duma in 2007 for Putin’s party United Russia, is currently a professor of international affairs at a Moscow university and has a history of parroting Putin’s statements in Western media.

“If Great Britain continues to be an aggressor against Russia, and if British Prime Minister Liz Truss still has a plan to destroy Russia, then the people of London should comprehend the threat [of nuclear weapons],” he stated.

Markov’s irrational remarks followed the Russian president’s announcement of a partial mobilization to bolster his faltering war in Ukraine and his most explicit nuclear threat to the West to date.

Vladimir Putin today threatened the West with nuclear annihilation over Ukraine and declared intentions to transfer seized portions of Ukraine to the Russian mainland.

Justin Webb, the host of BBC Radio 4, reacted calmly to Markov before switching off Putin’s microphone as he proceeded to rage.

Markov began by criticizing Western involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war and accusing the West of employing Ukrainian soldiers as “slaves” to diminish the Russian military.

“It was crystal evident that Russia was not at war with Ukraine,” he stated. “There is no justification to employ tactical nuclear weapons against Ukrainians.”

“However, Ukraine is seized by Western nations… it is Western nations fighting against the Russian army while enslaving Ukrainian soldiers.” This was Vladimir Putin’s key point.

Before questioning whether the ex-Putin aide and the Russian people felt there might be a victor in a nuclear war, the bemused host Justin Webb allowed Markov to reach his conclusion.

Markov answered, “Everyone in the world is currently contemplating nuclear war… which might be the outcome of the insane behavior of US president Joe Biden and British prime ministers Boris Johnson and [Liz] Truss.”

During his speech this morning, in which he ordered a partial mobilization of Russian military reservists to fight in Ukraine, Putin reminded Western nations he was prepared to deploy nuclear weapons if the West continued to threaten Russia’s ‘territorial integrity.’

The Kremlin head revealed that Russia possesses a variety of defense capabilities, some of which are superior to those of NATO nations.

This is not a bluff: when the territorial integrity of our nation is threatened, we will employ all available means to defend Russia and our people.

“Russian citizens can rest assured that the territorial integrity of our nation, our independence, and our liberty will be protected by any available means.”

Those attempting to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should be aware that the wind could blow in their direction.

The bellicose Russian leader claimed he was responding to threats made by unspecified high-ranking NATO officials over the potential use of weapons of mass destruction — nuclear weapons — against Russia.
