Former official of Gauteng Transport arrested for R16 million fraud

A former official of the Gauteng Transport and Logistics department and her accomplice have been arrested on charges including R16 million fraud, theft, and defeating the end of justice.

The accused allegedly utilized state resources for their own private business, resulting in an estimated loss of R16 million to the department. The fraud was committed during the official’s tenure as the regional manager for the Eastern Cape and Durban regions of the g-Fleet entity.

The arrests come after a six-year investigation by the Gauteng Transport Department’s Fraud and Anti-corruption Unit, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks), and the NPA. The accused have appeared for a bail application in the Durban Magistrates Court.

The Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has expressed satisfaction with the arrests and personally attended the court case along with the head of the department, Dr. Thulani Mdadane. Diale-Tlabela emphasized that the arrests should send a strong message to those who abuse their positions of trust and steal from the people.

The former official and her accomplice face charges of fraud, theft, and the use of state vehicles without authorized consent.
