Michelle Thompson, a former HR worker, now spends her days building intricate Lego creations such as the world’s smallest Primark and the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz.
Michelle never thought that her childhood love of Lego would turn into a career as a Lego Master Model Builder, but after applying for the role without much confidence five years ago, she secured the job and has been creating amazing builds ever since.
Michelle believes that Lego allows people to “step into a different world” and that “everybody can get something out of Lego”.
She primarily builds at work because she can’t keep that much Lego at home, but she still loves to see what others create with the bricks. Her job is “creative, exciting, and fun”, and Michelle finds it particularly rewarding to inspire and advise children.
Michelle’s creations can take days, weeks, or months to build, and she often uses Lego paper or a digital building system beforehand to get an idea of how a build will look.
She also teaches classes and has her own workshop where passers-by can come to see what she is creating. While Lego allows for anything to be built, Michelle notes that it doesn’t always go to plan and that getting it wrong is all part of the creative process.
Michelle’s favourite part of her job is seeing people understand and appreciate what she has built, whether it be children or adults.
She describes it as “putting in those little bits for everybody” and finding something that everyone can relate to or recognise from the world around them.
Although Michelle has built many impressive models, including her largest build to date, a life-sized fireplace that lights up, she finds it impossible to choose a favourite as they all represent different times and challenges.
