Federal government orders vice chancellors to reopen universities, resume lectures

The Federal Government has instructed university vice-chancellors to reopen campuses and permit students to resume classes.

This was revealed in a letter signed on Monday in Abuja by Mr. Sam Onazi, Director of Finance and Accounts for the National Universities Commission (NUC), on behalf of Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the commission’s Executive Secretary.

The letter encouraged all vice-chancellors, Pro-chancellors, and chairs of federal university governing councils to reopen the institutions.

Seven months have passed since members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on strike over inadequate welfare packages and unpaid entitlements at the nation’s public universities.

Last week, the National Industrial Court (NIC) in Abuja ordered teachers to cease their seven-month strike and return to the classrooms, but ASUU has since appealed the verdict.

ASUU’s attorney, Femi Falana, based the appeal on fourteen reasons.
The motion requests two varieties of relief:

Permission to submit the appeal pursuant to Section 243 of the Constitution, which requires the party to request permission from the court to appeal a judgment or ruling of the National Industrial Court (NIC).
Requesting a stay of execution of the court’s orders until the appeal hearing and decision.
