National Institutions Commission rescinded the government’s order to reopen federal institutions

The NUC issued a circular ordering all vice chancellors, pro chancellors, and chairs of the governing councils of federal universities to reopen their institutions. The development, nevertheless, drew criticism.

But in a subsequent circular, NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/136, also endorsed by Sam Onazi, the NUC’s Director of Finance and Accounts, the commission revoked the decision.

The letter was marked “removal of circular NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 dated September 23, 2022,” but it did not state why. I have been instructed to revoke the National Universities Commission (NUC) circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol64/135, dated September 23, 2022, on the aforementioned matter, according to part of the statement. As a result, the aforementioned circular is withdrawn.

Please take notice, vice chancellors, provosts, chairmen of governing councils, and vice chancellors of the federal institutions. All relevant parties will be informed of new developments and information.

Please accept the Executive Secretary’s best wishes and promises.

A source claims that the appeal filed against the ruling of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria did not support the revocation of the order.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, via its legal counsel, reportedly filed an appeal against the court’s ruling, which prompted the NUC to be reminded of its action.

The commission was also informed, according to the source, that the defendant had been successful in getting the court’s ruling mandating that it begin operations postponed.
