The Evening Standard Art Prize has returned for 2023, with a cash prize of £5,000 for the winner.

This year, the competition is sponsored by Editions de Parfum Frédéric Malle, and the winning artist will also receive a bespoke fragrance.

The theme for this year’s competition is “A Portrait of You,” with artists from various disciplines invited to submit a single work or a series that celebrates self-expression and individuality.

The shortlisted submissions will be exhibited at Cromwell Place in London, and the winner will be announced at a special event.

Judges for the competition include Nancy Durrant, Evening Standard’s Culture editor; Ben Cobb, editor of Evening Standard Magazine; Frédéric Malle, founder of Editions de Parfum Frédéric Malle; artist Aowen Jin; and other judges yet to be announced.

The deadline for entries is June 15, 2023, and it is open to all artists, except those who have had a solo exhibition in a public institution.

The winning artist for the 2017 competition was HelenA Pritchard, for her work inspired by London, while Ashton Attzs won the 2018 competition with their work exploring transgender identity.

The Evening Standard Art Prize provides a crucial platform for emerging artists to showcase their work and gain exposure to the wider industry.

Editions de Parfum Frédéric Malle, which is sponsoring this year’s competition, is renowned for its innovative and boundary-pushing perfumes.

Founded in 2000, the brand is a publishing house for the best in perfume designers, and has created modern classics such as Portrait of a Lady, Musc Ravageur and Carnal Flower, alongside other luxurious body butters, washes, and oils.

To enter the competition, artists must submit three to five images of their work, a supporting statement of 150-200 words, and dimensions and title of the artwork.

Entries must be the artist’s original work and can be of any size, but must fit through a standard door frame.

The winning entry will be the favorite of the judges, and finalists must be available to attend the London event during the week of September 4, 2023.

The Evening Standard and Frédéric Malle are the promoters of the competition, which is open only to UK residents aged 18 and above.

The competition closes on June 15, 2023, and the winner will receive a cash prize of £5,000 and a bespoke fragrance.
