Eskom issues stage 2 load shedding warning

Eskom has issued a warning that Stage 2 load shedding may be implemented over the following three days from 4 p.m. to midnight.

The power company indicated that a number of power plants are facing difficulties that could lead to the implementation of load shedding.

“The collapse of a generation unit at Medupi, Hendrina, Camden, and two units at Majuba power stations, as well as the delay in getting a generation unit back into service at Arnot, Kusile, and Koeberg power stations, have made the capacity issues worse.

“Load shedding may need to be enforced at short notice,” Eskom stated. “Should there be any further loss of generation capacity over the next three days, or should certain units fail to return to service as predicted.”

Over the next days, a few units from other power plants are anticipated to restart, which could provide some relief for the stressed electrical grid.

By Tuesday morning, 2986MW of energy were not available owing to maintenance, and 15 513MW were down due to breakdowns.

In order to protect the national grid, load shedding is only used as a last resort, Eskom would like to remind the public.

Therefore, we implore everyone in South Africa to continue using electricity sparingly, particularly during these tumultuous times for the power grid, according to the power company.
