The multi-million-pound deal between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Spotify has come to an end, reportedly due to the couple not meeting Spotify’s productivity targets.
Meghan hosted the Archetypes podcast, featuring guests such as Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, and Paris Hilton, covering topics of discrimination and sexism faced by women across 12 episodes from August 2022.
Mutual Agreement and Non-Renewal of the Podcast Series
Spotify and Archewell Audio, the couple’s content creation label, released a joint statement confirming that the podcast series addressing women’s issues would not be renewed for another season.
Expressing mutual agreement, the statement acknowledged the pride both parties had in the series they created together.
Discrepancy in Fulfilling the Lucrative Podcast Deal
Three years ago, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a lucrative deal estimated to be worth £18 million to produce and host podcasts.
However, reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest that the couple will not receive the full amount as the podcast failed to meet internal targets set by Spotify.
Meghan previously expressed her love for the podcast creation process and engaging in meaningful conversations with diverse and inspiring guests.
Spotify’s Layoffs and Meghan’s Future Podcast Plans
Spotify recently announced plans to lay off approximately 200 staff members, constituting about two percent of their podcast teams.
The streaming giant cited challenges in making podcasts profitable, despite their popularity among listeners.
Despite the end of their Spotify deal, it has been reported that Meghan is still interested in creating more podcasts and seeking a new platform for her series.
Post-Royal Endeavors and Controversies
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior working royals in 2020, seeking greater freedom and the ability to earn their own income in the United States.
In addition to their Spotify deal, they participated in a six-part Netflix series titled “Harry & Meghan.”
Prince Harry also released his bestselling memoir, “Spare,” which generated global headlines due to its revelations, including allegations of physical attacks by Prince William and derogatory remarks about Camilla.
The memoir exposed the rifts within the royal family, although Harry’s presence at the coronation hinted at the possibility of reconciliation.
