A German eatery called Eiscafé Rino located in the southern city of Rottenburg has introduced an unusual new ice cream flavour, featuring crickets as its main ingredient.

Owner Thomas Micolin created the cricket-flavoured ice cream, which is topped with dried crickets, and shared a photo of himself holding it on Instagram.

Micolin stated that he had been working on the recipe throughout the winter and that it was created on a bet. He acknowledged that he was aware of the potential backlash that his creation could generate, but he still decided to introduce it.

Micolin said that he wanted to “try everything” and that crickets were something he still wanted to try, particularly in the form of ice cream. The recipe for the cricket-flavoured ice cream consists of cricket flour, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and honey.

Despite receiving criticism, there are many adventurous customers who have given the flavour a try and have enjoyed it.

Micolin stated that those who try it are often very enthusiastic about the unique frozen treat, with some customers even coming in daily to purchase a scoop. According to Micolin, the introduction of this ice cream flavor is a small message for the food that could be the future.
