Education quality assessor, Umalusi, announces the appointment of its sixth council

The sixth council has been appointed, according to education quality assessor, Umalusi.

This occurs after the fifth council’s tenure expired on June 7, 2022.

The new council, which was chosen by Angie Motshekga, the minister of basic education, was announced by Umalusi on Monday. Its term will run from 8 June 2022 to 7 June 2026.

Professor Yunus Ballim was also chosen by the Minister to lead the council.

Umalusi spokesperson, Dr Lucky Ditaunyane, in a statement, said: “The new council will be officially installed at a formal welcome function on 6 September 2022. The CEO of Umalusi, Dr Mafu Rakometsi, thanked the members of the fifth council for doing excellent work in, among others, steering the organisation to two consecutive clean audits during their tenure.”

Rakometsi claimed that the outgoing fifth council, led by Professor John Volmink, had left a legacy of an organization that prudently and responsibly manages public resources.

“I thank all the men and women who served on the fifth council for setting the overall strategic direction of the organization, keeping management accountable, and ensuring that Umalusi meets its statutory obligations,” the speaker said.

Rakometsi also complimented Volmink for successfully governing Umalusi for two consecutive terms of four years.

“Prof Volmink is an astute academic, a public servant par excellence, and a transformational leader who maintains a high work ethic in everything he does. He is truly an asset to the education sector in our country.”

Rakometsi congratulated the new chairperson and other council members for the incoming  sixth council and wished them a fruitful and prosperous stay.

He added that he had no doubt that Ballim would lead the sixth council to continue building on the excellent job done by the fifth council and that Umalusi’s work would benefit greatly from their knowledge and experience.

According to Ditaunyane, members of the Umalusi Council by virtue of their positions include the chief executive officers of Umalusi, the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

The respective ministers have not yet designated council representatives for the departments of basic education and higher education and training.
