Earthquake with a magnitude of 1.5 on the Richter scale hit Cornwall

This morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 1.5 on the Richter scale hit Cornwall, causing locals to feel a “rumble” and their houses to shake.

The earthquake occurred at around 6.30am in Penryn, approximately two miles west of Falmouth, at a depth of 1.25 miles (2km), according to the British Geological Survey.

Although the quake does not appear to have caused any significant damage, residents reported feeling a “rolling rumble” that lasted between five and ten seconds.

This is the second recorded earthquake in Cornwall in recent months, with the last occurring in late October 2020.
