The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning regarding potential terrorist attacks on places of worship and recreational centers before and during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, called for heightened vigilance in preparation for the Islamic festival.
Terrorist Plot Uncovered
According to the DSS, intelligence reports have revealed plans to target worship and recreational centers during the festivities.
These reports have prompted the security agency to take preemptive action to ensure the safety of the public.
The DSS disclosed that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recently discovered during a raid in Kogi and Nasarawa states, providing evidence of the planned attacks.
Joint Security Operations Yield Results
Working in collaboration, a joint security team composed of the DSS, Nigerian Army, and Police conducted operations in Nasarawa and Kogi states.
One of the operations led to the arrest of Abubakar Muhammad, also known as Abu Direba, suspected to be involved in arms trafficking.
The team seized a significant amount of ammunition, 22 prepared IEDs, cash, and a vehicle.
Another successful joint operation targeted the hideout of Kabir Bala, alias Okwo, a notorious gang leader and former prison escapee.
Okwo engaged the security forces in a firefight, resulting in his neutralization.
Although some gang members managed to escape, the operation led to the recovery of weapons, including an AK47 rifle, locally fabricated firearms, phones, and charms.
Call for Caution and Collaboration
The DSS has urged caution ahead of the Eid celebrations, particularly due to the uncovered plots to attack religious and recreational venues.
The discovery of primed IEDs among suspected terrorists serves as evidence of these threats.
The public, including operators and customers of public venues such as markets and malls, are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the appropriate security agencies.
The DSS emphasizes its commitment to collaborating with sister agencies to conduct proactive drills and thwart criminal activities.
By partnering with other security forces, the DSS aims to ensure the safety and security of the populace during the festive period.
