Driving mum gets fined for holding phone on the wheel

A woman was fined $362 and lost five demerit points for holding a mobile phone while driving, but she claims it was actually her daughter’s toy Bluey phone.

The incident occurred on the Princes Highway in Sydney’s inner south on February 10 and was caught by a traffic camera.

Upon reviewing the photo evidence, the woman realized it was indeed her daughter’s toy and not her mobile phone.

Transport for NSW has said it will work with Revenue NSW to review the penalty notice, and any member of the public who has questions about an infringement notice can request a review of their case.

Although it is illegal to use a mobile device while driving, there are no specific road rules that prohibit holding other items, but drivers can still be fined if doing so affects their control of the vehicle or concentration.
