Drivers risk losing their license during the holiday weekend due to double demerits

Due to the double demerits that will be in effect during the holiday weekend, drivers run the danger of losing their license for even the smallest of traffic violations.

On Monday, October 3, residents of New South Wales, the ACT, and South Australia will take advantage of the Labor Day public holiday.

In NSW and ACT, drivers will be subject to double demerit limitations over the vacation period, although South Australia is exempt from these restrictions.

During this time, violating the speed limit, wearing a seat belt, a motorbike helmet, or using a cell phone while driving results in two additional demerit points.

The four-day double demerit period will begin on Friday, September 30, and end on Monday, October 3, both days included.

Drivers who are discovered using their phones while operating a vehicle will be fined $457 and given 10 penalty points.

A driver will get six penalty points for failing to buckle up, and 12 points if two of their passengers fail to buckle up as well.

Due to the National Day of Mourning for the death of Queen Elizabeth, last weekend also featured a double demerit period.

When a public holiday falls on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday, double demerit periods are automatically applied to the weekends.

Labor Day is a federal holiday that falls on Monday, October 3.
