Demi Lovato grew up with mental abuse and drug addiction

Variety writes that actress-singer Demi Lovato has discussed the mental and physical abuse she has undergone in the entertainment world, from her days as a child star through occurrences that forced her to enter rehab.

The 30-year-old singer sat down with the podcast ‘Call Her Daddy’ to reflect on her career, sharing some of the darker incidents she’s encountered, such as when an unnamed member of her team told her she wasn’t “sick enough” to seek medical attention after she explained that she was “vomiting blood.”

“I believe that was his way of saying, ‘No, you’re not going back to treatment, because if you do, this would reflect poorly on me,’” Lovato said Variety in 2017, recalling the incident. Less than one year later, she “ultimately overdosed.”

According to Variety, Lovato began dabbling with drugs at the age of 13 after being prescribed opiates for car accident-related ailments.

“My mother did not expect to have to lock up her 13-year-old daughter’s opioids, but I was already drinking,” Lovato added.

“I had been bullied and was seeking an escape; when my mother noticed how many pills had vanished and how quickly, she confiscated them and locked them up.”

Lovato revealed during the subsequent years that she continued to “obtain specific kind of medications” when she was 15 or 16 years old, including swiping her mother’s Xanax.

“It was intermittent. Then, when I was 17, I tried coke for the first time and fell in love with it “She continued by recounting the time period following the debut of her original Disney Channel film, “Camp Rock.”

This resulted in me seeking treatment immediately after turning 18 years old.

Variety reports that between 2016 and 2018, Lovato discussed the resurgence of her eating condition.

“One time, I binged and purge within the same night. I told my crew the truth and said, “Hey, this occurred.””

According to Lovato, she snuck out of her hotel room that night to avoid being unable to call room service since her managers had removed the phones.

Lovato revealed that her team later confined her in her hotel room by blocking the entrance with furniture.

“This amount of control over my meals further exacerbated my eating condition,” she continued.
