The number of missing people is not yet clear, as the number of passengers on board exceeded the 205 listed in the ship’s manifest.

Four members of the coast guard and an unknown number of army personnel were also reportedly on board but not listed in the manifest.

One survivor, firefighter Jayson Ahijon, recounted how the fire and thick smoke caused panic among passengers, leading some to jump overboard without putting on life jackets.

Ahijon and several coast guard officers helped other passengers to safety, including a baby they put in a bucket and lowered over the side of the boat.

Poor Sea Transport in the Philippines

The Philippines has a poor record of sea transport, with its badly regulated ferries often overcrowded and prone to accidents.

This tragedy highlights the need for improved regulation and safety measures to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.
