David Trimble dies at 77

Political figures and other dignitaries have arrived to attend David Trimble’s memorial service with his family and friends. Trimble was the architect of the peace process.

The 77-year-old recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize passed away last week after battling sickness.

The 1998 Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, which put an end to decades of conflict in Northern Ireland, was forged in large part because to the peer and former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.

A few months after the agreement was reached, Lord Trimble of County Down and late SDLP leader John Hume shared the Nobel Peace Prize in honour of their work to put an end to the killing and establish a system of devolved authority in the area.

On Monday afternoon, the funeral will be held at Harmony Hill Presbyterian Church in Lisburn.

Among those likely to attend are Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Irish President Michael D. Higgins, and Taoiseach Micheal Martin.

Political figures from Northern Ireland are also anticipated at the service.

The Stormont Assembly will resume on Tuesday for a special session to honour Lord Trimble.

The establishment of a power-sharing government has been blocked by the DUP in retaliation for the Northern Ireland Protocol of Brexit, putting the institutions on hold.

Books of condolence for the seasoned politician were opened last week in a number of Northern Ireland towns and cities.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to Lord Trimble, calling him a “giant of British and world politics,” while Mr. Martin praised his “essential contribution” to the drive for peace on the island of Ireland.

Former prime ministers of the UK and Ireland, Sir Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern, who both participated in the protracted Good Friday negotiations, also praised his contribution to peacebuilding.

Both Sir Tony and Mr. Ahern praised him as a “courageous” leader for his “immense, indelible, and quite frankly irreplaceable” contribution.

Former Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, a unionist’s longtime political rival, congratulated him for aiding in the passage of the Good Friday Agreement.

The four children of Lord and Lady Daphne Trimble and their spouse remain.
