Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, finally broke his silence on social media after the military openly declared taking control of the country.
The military’s announcement came shortly after detaining President Bazoum on the previous day.
The coup was broadcasted on national television early the following day, with ten military officers directly addressing President Bazoum, citing the reasons for their action as the “deteriorating security situation and bad governance.”
As part of their proclamation, they dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions, and closed the country’s borders.
President Bazoum took to his Twitter account on Thursday to express his commitment to safeguarding the hard-earned achievements of democracy.
In a tweet written in French, he stated, “The hard-won achievements will be safeguarded. All Nigerians who love democracy will see to it.”
Furthermore, the country’s Foreign Minister, Hassoumi Massoudou, also utilized social media, specifically X (formerly known as Twitter), to call upon “all democrats and patriots” to stand against the coup and work towards its failure.
Amidst the unfolding situation, President Bazoum’s foreign minister, Hassoumi Massoudou, assured the public in an interview with FRENCH 24 that the leader was in good health.
He emphasized that despite the coup, the elected government remains the legal and legitimate power in Niger.
