Court sentences a teenage son who stabbed mum to life imprisonment

A teenage kid who admitted to manslaughter and repeatedly stabbed his mother with a hunting knife received a life sentence.

Ingrid Matthew, 54, was repeatedly knifed by 19-year-old Aaron Matthew before he sliced her throat and left her to die on the floor of his bedroom.

At the residence in Leicester on September 11, 2017, her ex-partner and Aaron Matthew’s father, Andrew Marshall, discovered her body in a pool of blood, according to evidence presented at Leicester Crown Court.

Ms. Matthew’s brother Curtis characterised his sister as “absolutely unselfish” and discussed how the family was still getting used to life without her almost a year after her passing in a victim statement read out during the trial.

The following day, Aaron Matthew turned himself in to Cambridgeshire police after learning of his mother’s demise.

Although he was charged with murder, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of reduced responsibility after telling the court that his mother was slain while he was suffering from Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which had not yet been properly diagnosed.

After a judge determined that the kid posed a “severe risk to the community,” he recently received a life sentence and was mandated to serve at least six years and 226 days in prison.

The East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s Detective Inspector Nicole Main stated afterward: “Only Aaron Matthew can explain why he killed the life of his own mother.

“I hope that Ingrid’s family and her closest friends can find some solace in today’s sentencing.

My sincere condolences are sent to them as they continue their grieving journey to come to terms with their loss.

“Unfortunately, no penalty handed will bring her back.”

After the incident, Ms. Matthew’s family released the following statement: “Ingrid was a private person but a lovely, vivacious and special personality.”

She was always smiling, dancing, and ready to assist anyone in need.

We are grieved by her passing since she was entirely selfless. Our new reality is that we must learn to live without her.

‘Ingy is missed. We are appreciative of everything she done to support her mother and other people.

“We are extremely proud of the way she consistently encouraged others and celebrated their accomplishments.

Ingrid’s loved ones, friends, and the community will all miss her terribly.

We sincerely adore her and hope that one day we can accept her demise.

“We are aware that the criminal justice system must play a part in putting an end to violence against women and young girls.

But we also have a role to play as individuals, community members, and members of society as a whole.

“As a family, we can attest to the critical nature of this.”

Between March 2021 and March 2022, more than 100 women were killed by men, including Ms. Matthew.

Sabina Nessa, a 28-year-old teacher from south east London, was murdered less than a week after Ms. Matthew.

According to the most recent Femicide Census from 2020, a woman was murdered by a man every three days over the previous ten years.
