Cory Doctorow, Californian activist falls victim to fake website scam after searching for local Thai restaurant’s website

After searching for a local Thai restaurant, Kiin, Californian author, journalist, and activist Cory Doctorow fell victim to a fake website scam. A fake website resembling the real Kiin site had managed to place an order on Doctorow’s behalf, with a 15% markup.

Despite the scammer’s efforts, the staff at Kiin identified the fraudulent activity and canceled the order. Doctorow was outraged by the experience and questioned how the scammers managed to obtain an American Express merchant account in the name of “KIINTHAILA” without being detected.

He also criticized Google Ads for accepting payment from scammers and suggested that Amex, Google, and website hosting company Wix should be able to identify and prevent fraudulent activities.

Doctorow expressed fears that numerous fake Wix websites and Amex merchant accounts might pose a threat to legitimate businesses.
