Contractors and property owners are being investigated for unsafe property in turkey

At least 50,000 lives have been lost in a catastrophic earthquake in Turkey, and over 600 construction contractors and property owners are being investigated for the collapse of buildings. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag has stated that 184 suspects have already been arrested, with some accused of building unsafe properties that failed to meet earthquake-engineering standards. Construction codes in Turkey are rarely enforced, leading to questions about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s failure to enforce building regulations. Among those arrested is a mayor of one of the towns impacted by the quakes. The death toll has exceeded 50,000, with over 160,000 buildings having collapsed or been severely damaged.

The property developer who built the block of 249 apartments in which former Chelsea star Christian Atsuin died was also arrested for suspicions about the building’s construction. Mehmet Yasar Coskun denied fleeing the country and suggested that the public was looking for scapegoats as Turkish authorities issued 113 arrest warrants connected to construction work across the country. Nine thousand aftershocks have taken place in Turkey since the deadly quake on February 6.
