No Change Since 1993
Renowned Nigerian comedian Francis Agoda, popularly known as I Go Dye, has expressed strong criticism towards Nigerian politicians on the occasion of Democracy Day.
In an Instagram post on Monday, he asserted that there has been no significant change since 1993 and instead, a complete breakdown of law and order has occurred.
Democracy for the Government, Not the People
I Go Dye highlighted that democracy in Nigeria is not about the welfare of the populace but rather the governance of political parties in the interest of their members and influential cliques.
According to him, this system aims to manipulate and exploit the collective resources of the citizens.
Worse Electoral Malpractice
The comedian went on to emphasize that many individuals who condemned the 1993 presidential election are now involved in even worse forms of electoral malpractice, mirroring the behavior of the military rule under General Ibrahim Babangida.
As a result, I Go Dye believes that democracy has been murdered in Nigeria.
Manipulation and Injustice
I Go Dye expressed his disappointment in the current state of Nigerian democracy, pointing out the widespread buying of votes, intimidation of voters, shooting incidents at polling units, and manipulation of election results in favor of certain candidates.
He called for politicians to feel ashamed of the state of democratic institutions, stating that no significant positive changes have been made since 1993.
Addressing Social Injustice
In conclusion, I Go Dye emphasized the need to confront the injustices and social inequality prevalent in the country.
He stated that the breakdown of law and order is evident and urged for the recognition and condemnation of the mistreatment of voters.
