CITY IS AT WAR WITH THE CABLE THIEVES

From Monday, January 16, 2023, through Thursday, January 19, 2023, City Power has reported about 33 cases of vandalism and cable theft.

This includes multiple vandalised minisub stations in various locations.

Tshifularo Mashava, the entity’s chief executive officer (CEO), stated that the entity has adopted a community-centered infrastructure security strategy, which includes crime information collection and special security operations, the use of technology, the armed response, local security contracting, and the recruitment of more security officers.

Mashava asks locals to be cautious and to continue to serve as guardians of the power infrastructure by reporting any suspicious activity in its vicinity.

Tshifularo Mashava said, “We are in a war.”

“We will increase patrols in the area with the help of the police and JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department). This encounter shows how brazen and heavily armed the cable theft syndicate is.”

Mashava said that greater resources are being allocated to the battle against cable theft and vandalism. They think that the fight will be won, particularly with the active participation of the communities they serve.

“In this current financial year, the entity has been allocated R300 million for the fight against cable theft and infrastructure vandalism,” Mashava said.

Three escaped on Thursday, 29 January 2023, after opening fire on security guards.

Tshifularo Mashava said, “The suspects were detected while trying to break the concrete barrier on M1 double-decker to access the integral cable feeding power from Fordsburg through the underground tunnels to Braamfontein.”

“The area is where we lost two of our security officers who were ambushed while patrolling the double-decker highway a year ago.

“This is the daily experience for our security personnel.” Mashava said.

There were no injuries on the guards’ side.

Tshifularo Mashava said, “It was during this time that the suspects managed to escape, leaving behind their tools, including a crowbar and axe, at the crime scene.”

Mashava has praised the security and law enforcement authorities’ efforts to combat cable thieves.
