Carlos Medina has admitted to murdering Bishop David O’Connell

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced at a press conference on Wednesday that Carlos Medina, the husband of Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell’s housekeeper, had confessed to the murder of the bishop.

Gascón stated that Medina admitted to the killing and that the weapon used in the murder had been recovered, along with other evidence from the crime scene. The bishop had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Medina was not motivated by money, according to detectives, despite an initial tip suggesting that the suspect believed O’Connell owed him money. The bishop was found dead in his Hacienda Heights home on Saturday, and authorities launched an intensive manhunt for the killer.

Detectives identified Medina as a person of interest on Sunday evening after a tipster reported that he was displaying strange and irrational behavior and had made comments about the bishop owing him money. He was arrested on Monday morning and charged on Wednesday.

During the press conference, Gascón revealed that there was no forced entry to O’Connell’s residence, and it was assumed that Medina had used a key or some other form of access. If convicted, Medina faces 35 years to life in prison.
