Canada’s Brendan Mackay wins gold medal in freestyle skiing world championships

Brendan Mackay, a native of Calgary, won a gold medal at the freestyle skiing world championships in the men’s halfpipe final on Saturday in Bakuriani, Georgia. He scored 97.25 in the final, beating the 95.75 score of silver medallist Jon Sallinen of Finland.

Ferreira of the United States took the bronze medal with a score of 93.00. Whistler’s Simon d’Artois finished fourth with a score of 92.00. Andrew Longino and Dylan Marineau, both of Calgary, did not qualify for the final.

Rachael Karker of Erin, Ont., won a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle halfpipe final. Karker scored 92.25, finishing behind gold medallist Hanna Faulhaber of the United States (95.75) and Great Britain’s Zoe Akin (94.50). Calgary’s Amy Fraser and Dillan Glennie of Courtenay, B.C. advanced to the final, finishing fifth and eighth, respectively.

Megan Oldham, a native of Parry Sound, Ont., won a bronze medal in the women’s big air final. She scored 174.00 in the final, finishing just behind Norway’s Sandra Eie (175.00), who took silver.

French skier Tess Ledeux won the gold medal in the event with a score of 186.75. This was Oldham’s second medal at the world championships, having won a silver in the slopestyle earlier in the week.
