Bride asks if she was wrong not asking 20-year-old pal to “childfree” wedding

Reddit users have declared an anonymous lady to be a problematic friend and host after she stated she wanted a “childfree” wedding and will not invite her 20-year-old pal owing to concerns about underage drinking.

The rumored future bride posted her dilemma on the “Am I the A–hole” subreddit, a famous online forum where members vote on who is at fault in a civil dispute. In addition, she posed a query questioning if her childless wedding was a mistake.

The bride, whose Reddit nickname is 21wedding, confirmed that she is 22 years old and childless.

“Since my fiancé and I do not have children and we intend to serve alcohol at our wedding, we have decided to have a child-free wedding with a 21-year-old age limit,” the bride wrote on January 18.

The majority of her wedding guests do not have children, therefore the no-children policy has “gone over well,” according to the bride.

A problem has reportedly emerged with the bride’s 20-year-old acquaintance, whose identity has been protected by the alias “Mel.”

The bride says that Mel was excluded from the wedding owing to her age.

“After realizing that virtually everyone else in the same social circle had been invited except her, she confronted me and demanded an explanation,” 21wedding said. “I tried to explain that it wasn’t personal and that I simply didn’t want to be concerned with underage drinking on my wedding day.”

The bride claimed that Mel has accused her of being a “bad friend” and argued that they both consumed alcohol before they were 21.

According to the Alcohol Policy Information System of the National Institutes of Health, the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 forbids those under the age of 21 from purchasing or publicly having alcoholic beverages.

The bride revealed she had previously consumed alcohol young, but she disagrees with Mel’s viewpoint.

“I told her it was different because we were both underage at the time (I was 20 and she was between 18 and 19 when we began drinking together),” 21wedding stated. “As an adult, I feel obligated to prevent underage drinking, and as the bride, I believe I have the right to have a wedding without children.”

The bride said that “Mel is unconvinced” and has begun speaking poorly about her among the pair’s mutual friends.

“[She] is making snide remarks about my sense of superiority,” 21wedding stated. “I don’t understand why she can’t just chill out and let me have my wedding day my way.”

The bride’s Reddit post has earned over 12,300 upvotes, and community members have voted to classify 21wedding as incorrect in the situation she provided.

“It’s strange that you consider someone who is one year younger than you to be a ‘kid’… yet you believe YOU are old enough to marry?! So near to becoming a child?!” This comment received almost 53,600 upvotes from the top commenter on the post.

“[You are the jerk],” continued the leading commentator. “You would not have to worry about underage drinking; only the bartender would be concerned.”

Another Reddit user said that Mel should count herself fortunate that she is not participating in the wedding.

The Reddit poster explained, “The fact that she can say these things in front of others indicates that they all agree, but won’t say it to your face because you’re being a bridezilla.”

One Reddit member responded that 21wedding and Mel’s common buddy group may be “equally ridiculous.”

In a fake scenario, the Reddit user remarked, “Oh my, we sophisticated 21-22-year-old women of the world couldn’t possibly associate with a 20-year-old CHILD like you.” “Go play with your dolls, young lady. You will eventually comprehend. Particularly June 17, which is your birthday.’”

Several other Reddit users noted that 21wedding’s “childfree” allusion was deceptive, and they were prepared to defend her position until they saw that no kids were addressed and that childcare wasn’t the major problem.

Reddit user: “I was prepared to be on her side for the first half.” “Speaking of being too large for your boots. Is this a moral conundrum? Or [are you] terrified about legal consequences?”

The Reddit user said, “If it’s just one 20-year-old drinking, no one will notice, but if it’s a concern that the barely legal underage person won’t be able to handle their alcohol, it would be reasonable to ask her to keep her wits about her to avoid a spectacle.” “However, I believe this is one of the instances in which you should make an exception to this rule. Or anticipate that she will no longer be your close buddy.”

21wedding responded to many comments in the thread and thanked at least one Reddit user for agreeing that she is not in the wrong for seeking to discourage underage drinking.

“Exact,” answered 21wedding. “I’m glad someone understands the risks.”

She responded to a Reddit user’s suggestion that she doesn’t like Mel by stating, “No, I adore Mel. I really can’t tolerate for underage drinking.”

When another Reddit user suggested Mel may be invited provided she brought a chaperone, perhaps one of her parents, the bride responded, “Mel’s parents are not coming.”

One Reddit user argued that 21wedding is hypocritical because she “self-admittedly drinks while underage.”

The bride responded, “Since then, I’ve changed and grown.”
