A royally good costume! Boy dressing up as Prince Harry from the cover of Spare steals the show for World Book Day as children wear outfits of their favourite characters from literature

World Book Day is an annual event aimed at promoting reading for pleasure among young children. Parents and guardians shared pictures of their children dressed up as their favourite characters from literature on social media.

Among them was a little boy named Ellis, who dressed up as Prince Harry holding his autobiography, Spare. The costume, which was created by his mother, a make-up artist and hair stylist, included a painted-on ginger beard and expressive eyebrows to mimic the prince’s look.

Many other children dressed up as characters from popular children’s books, such as Hermione Granger and Harry Potter from JK Rowling’s hit series, Paddington Bear, Poo Collector, Evil Pea, and Gangsta Granny. Singer Paloma Faith shared a photo of her eldest daughter dressed as a lion, inspired by the children’s book Jill and the Lion by Lesley Barnes.

The event is a registered charity that aims to develop a habit of reading among young children, offering every youngster their own book. UNESCO has designated World Book Day as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, marked in over 100 countries worldwide.

Despite some schools bringing the event forward by a day to Wednesday, many others were closed or had restricted access to pupils due to strikes by the National Education Union (NEU) across parts of the country.

Tens of thousands of teachers across the Midlands and eastern England, as well as many more in Scotland, are striking today in a long-running dispute over pay. The NEU has accused the government of ‘burying its head in the sand’ as underfunded pay increases have ‘pushed the profession to its limits’.

The Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has invited the teaching unions to ‘formal talks on pay, conditions and reform’ on the condition that this week’s walkouts were suspended.

However, Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, joint general secretaries of the NEU, have called for the Education Secretary to withdraw her ‘unnecessary pre-conditions’ and negotiate with the union. Further national strikes by NEU members in England and Wales are planned for March 15 and 16.
