On Monday afternoon, Baroness Owen of Alderley Edge, the contentious new peer appointed by Boris Johnson, assumed her position in the House of Lords.
At just 30 years old, Charlotte Owen, a former special adviser, has become Britain’s youngest life peer, despite having predominantly held behind-the-scenes political roles in both Johnson’s and successor Liz Truss’ administrations.
Her inclusion on Johnson’s resignation honours’ list came as a surprise to many, given her relatively low-profile background.
Lord Houchen of High Leven Joins the House of Lords
Joining Baroness Owen in the House of Lords is Ben Houchen, the elected Mayor of Tees Valley, who now holds the title of Lord Houchen of High Leven.
These appointments are expected to contribute to a reduction in the average age of the Lords, which stood at 71 as of March this year.
A Glimpse into Baroness Owen’s Background
Baroness Owen’s title, “Alderley Edge,” is believed to be a reference to her hometown in Cheshire.
Born in 1993, she attended the University of York, where she graduated with a 2:1 in politics and international relations in 2015.
Her career in Westminster commenced in 2017 when she interned for various MPs, including a six-month stint in Boris Johnson’s office.
Rise to Prominence in Westminster
Ms. Owen continued her journey in politics, serving as a parliamentary assistant for Tory MPs Sir Alok Sharma, Sir Jake Berry, and Boris Johnson.
Eventually, she assumed the role of a senior parliamentary assistant to the former prime minister in 2020.
Between February 2021 and October 2022, Ms. Owen became a special adviser to both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss during Truss’ brief tenure as prime minister.
Shaun Bailey Becomes Baron for Paddington
In addition to the appointments of Baroness Owen and Lord Houchen, former London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey has been granted the title of Baron for Paddington, further shaping the landscape of the House of Lords.
