Bondi Beach’s 20-year-old spearfisherman goes unconscious

A 20-year-old spear fisherman was dragged unconscious from the ocean at Bondi Beach and is now battling for his life.

Around 4 pm on Thursday, the guy got into danger at the well-known swimming area and was saved by lifeguards.

Before lifeguards transported him onto the beach on a jet ski and resumed their efforts to resuscitate him, his companions performed CPR on the rocks in North Bondi.

The man was found unconscious and was pulled to the out of the water and onto the rocks before his friends attempted CPR. Lifesavers then quickly brought him back to the beach on a jet ski, before being treated on scene and transported to hospital in a critical condition

The victim was treated on the spot by the medical staff of the Toll Ambulance Helicopter before being transported in a serious condition by ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital.

The guy had been spearfishing with five other persons, who were evaluated on the spot by paramedics from NSW Ambulance.

“This was a really distressing encounter for this man’s pals,” said NSW Ambulance Inspector Giles Buchanan. “We praise their fast reaction in attempting to save their buddy.”
