President Joe Biden said on Tuesday night that he is “confident” in the 52-year-old and downplayed a report that said his son Hunter might soon be charged with a crime.
According to a Washington Post report last week, the investigation into Biden’s only surviving son has been ongoing for years but is now rapidly coming to a head.
Unnamed federal officials told the publication that they believe there is sufficient evidence to indict him for tax fraud as well as for lying about his information when purchasing a firearm in 2018.
First of all, let me say that I’m proud of my son. This child is no longer a child; he is now an adult.
He developed a drug addiction, as has happened in many families. That hasn’t stopped him. He has started a new life. When asked about the report in a brand-new primetime interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Biden responded.
I’m sure he is because of the consistency between his actions and words. He published a book about his issues, for instance, and was open and honest about it. I’m happy for him.
Although he insisted that he ‘didn’t know anything about it,’ Biden seemed to break his promise to maintain objectivity when he ventured to explain the reason behind his son’s contentious prior possession of a firearm.
The president said, “He came along and said, by the way, this thing about a gun – I didn’t know anything about it.”
But it turns out that he stated, “I guess you get asked – I don’t guess, you get asked a question, are you on drugs, or do you use drugs,” when he made an application to buy a gun. He said “no.”
He added, quoting from his son’s most recent biography, “And he talked about saying no…in his book.” I am thus quite confident in my kid. I adore him, and he has been morally upright for a few years at this point. And I just love him so much.
According to reports, investigators put together the case as they wait for Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, a Trump appointment, to determine whether or not to file charges against Biden’s sole surviving son.
According to the Post, Attorney General Merrick Garland has maintained his impartiality in the matter.
The Biden campaign and the White House have struggled with Hunter’s international business transactions because Republican legislators’ promises to launch official investigations if they take control of Congress in the next election.
Republicans have questioned Hunter’s business ties in China and the Ukraine when his father served as Barack Obama’s vice president. These matters are covered in a large number of emails that were discovered on the hard disk of a laptop Hunter allegedly left at a Delaware repair shop.
In an earlier interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes from last month, Biden defended his son.
Despite the controversy Hunter caused for the Biden campaign during the 2020 election, he downplayed worries that Hunter might hurt him if he ran for reelection in 2024.
The president also reaffirmed that his son’s professional life was distinct from that of the White House after opposition figures in the previous election cycle raised concerns about Hunter’s wealthy position on the board of a Ukrainian energy company at the same time that his father was in charge of that country’s anti-corruption initiatives as vice president.
First and foremost, I adore my son. He battled an addiction issue. He won the battle. He wrote about it,’ Biden told 60 Minutes in reference to his son’s self-confessed battle with drugs and alcohol.
‘And no, there’s not a single thing that I’ve witnessed at all from- that would effect me or the United States relevant to my kid Hunter.’
