Before Women’s Day, Gauteng Traffic Police arrested DUI suspects

A drinking and driving operation was carried out by the Gauteng Traffic Police at Eldorado Park in the days leading up to the holiday for International Women’s Day.

The purpose of the operation was to clamp down on careless and reckless drivers.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police will continue to enforce compliance with road safety laws and regulations in an attempt to safeguard the lives of those who utilize the roadways.

Sello Maremane, a spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Police, made the following statement on Monday: “All drivers who are discovered behaving themselves with impunity will be detained to face the full force of the law.”

During the operation, which took place over the previous weekend, the police detained nine drivers on suspicion that they were operating their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

The drivers are anticipated to make their first court appearance on Monday in the Kliptown Magistrate’s Court to face allegations of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The blood alcohol concentration of the sober driver with the highest reading was 0.72 mg/1000 ml, which is more than double the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1000 ml.

The reading of the driver with the lowest reading was 0.55 mg/1000 ml.

A majority of the drivers are between the ages of 30 and 45 years old.

“The irresponsible behavior of drivers on Gauteng roads is really disappointing, and it will not be permitted since it undermines our efforts to improve road safety. We have zero tolerance for this behavior.”

According to Maremane, drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol are two major factors that contribute considerably to the high number of fatal car accidents that occur on the province’s roads.
